The history of the Nantes Natural History Museum begins with the creation of a private practice in 1799 by the pharmacist François-René Dubuisson. It was in 1872 that the museum moved into the premises it still occupies today. These premises have undergone numerous renovations and expansions over time.
The collections cover all areas of natural history. On the ground floor there are minerals, rocks, fossils and one of the richest meteorite collections in France. On the first floor we find the zoology gallery with more than a thousand specimens of vertebrate animals, including a whale skeleton more than 18 meters long. There is also a vivarium specializing in snakes and lizards. In the mezzanine of the museum there is a collection of 5000 shells of gastropods. You can see a small part of the botanical collection, which is mainly in the storerooms, by going up the stairs: it is a 1903 presentation of different woods.
