The Tournel castle is a feudal castle built at an altitude of more than 1000 m, located in St Julien du Tournel, in Lozère (France). It is now in ruins, but during the 12th century at the time of its construction the fortified castle was the centerpiece of the barony of Tournel. In the 14th century, the barony moved to a more comfortable castle, but the Tournel castle, due to its reputedly impregnable position, remained an enviable fallback solution during various conflicts. Then in the 17th century, like many feudal fortresses, it was dismantled and then looted. It was in the 20th century that the ruins were gradually restored, maintained and consolidated.
Around the castle there are now the ruins of a dozen schist houses with slate roofs.
For the curious, we can see the Tournel castle in season 1 of Hero Corp, a French series.
Like the Ardvreck castle in Scotland, here is Tournel castle under different lights, here in winter and summer.
